The Purpose of Purpose

I had a conversation with God one day that went like this:

“God what is the purpose of purpose?”

“To inspire.”

“Is that is?”

“What else is there?”

I started thinking about our society and realized that everything in our world is the product of someone’s dream. Someone was inspired to create, to build, and to discover everything we have. Inspiration is the spark that motivates us to move forward. Doctors save lives, artists create pieces the invoke emotion and creativity, engineers build infrastructure, scientist develop medications and vaccines, activists aim to solve world hunger and bring fresh water to third world nations, preachers write sermons, and farmers produce our food. Each of these people were inspired to bring something amazing to this world.

The definition of inspire is the urge or ability to do or feel something, especially creative. When we feel this urge and create art, or build an invention, or discover the next advancement in modern medicine, that inspiration trickles down into others and it spreads. Do you know what the end game of inspiration is? HOPE.

Hope is the desire for something and the confidence in its fulfillment. When we hear stories about miracles, or people who defy the odds to be the first, it gives us hope. There is always an exception to the rule so why can’t it be us? That hope continues to drive us to take risks, follow our dreams, and step out of our comfort zones. As Christians our purpose is always to build a relationship with God and to bring Him glory. How we do that is unique to each one of us since we all have our own strengths and talents. In the process of fulfilling our purpose, we will inevitably inspire others to do the same.

Sometimes we get discouraged when we don’t see things coming to fruition, but hope always brings us back to our purpose after a season. God has a way of putting people in our path and redirecting our focus. I recently read a story about a woman who was losing faith because she had no way to feed her family. That night a woman knocked on her car window and gave her groceries. God always knows just what we need, and He never lets us down. There is nothing to me that is more inspiring than that!

Knowing that God is going to show up for me is my driving force. It is what keeps moving me forward. He has never let me down and never will. His plans for all of our lives are to prosper us (Jeremiah 29:11), comfort us (2 Cor. 1:3) and to be our strength when we are weak (2 Cor. 12:10). He heals the broken hearted (Psalm 34:18) and is near to those that call on Him (Psalm 145:18). I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for a God that intervenes on my behalf. I would’ve died a long time ago if God didn’t strategically place people in my life at exactly the right time.

It’s truly amazing that the creator of the universe cares that much about each one of us. Do you realize how big the universe is and how small we are in comparison? Yet we are loved and cared for as individuals. We are filled with purpose and hope by a God that created each one of us unique. Now that is inspiring!

If you’re feeling discouraged today, please remember that you are not alone. You are LOVED and everything you need to get you through this season will be given to you. Just hold on to the one that calms the storms and allow Him to move in your life. Jesus died for us so that we could live. Not just in eternity, but here on earth as well. Don’t give up. Keep pressing forward (Phil. 3:14). I promise. It will be ok.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
